How to show up when customers ask AI for a business like yours
More people now open ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews and ask "who's the best plumber near me?" or "which dentist takes my insurance?" instead of scrolling search results. This is a practical guide to being the business the AI recommends.
The models answer those questions by reading websites and picking the businesses they can understand and trust. If a model can't clearly tell what you do, where you operate, and what you offer, it recommends a competitor it understood better. Making your site easy for AI to read and quote is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and the good news is that most of it is straightforward.

An AI can only recommend what it can read. If your homepage is a logo, a slideshow and a phone number, there is almost nothing for a model to work with. Put it in real text: what you do ("emergency plumbing and drain cleaning"), where you serve ("Newton and the greater Boston area"), and who it's for. One clear sentence near the top does more than a page of clever taglines.
2. Add structured data (the single biggest lever)
Structured data, written as JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, hands the facts to AI directly instead of making it guess. A LocalBusiness block can state your name, address, phone, hours, service area, services and reviews in a format every model and search engine reads the same way. Sites with clean structured data are dramatically easier for AI to represent accurately. If you do one thing from this list, do this one.
3. Answer the questions customers actually ask
AI assistants love to quote clear answers. Add an FAQ that answers the real questions people ask before they buy: do you offer X, how much does Y cost, are you open Saturday, do you service my area, how fast can you come. Write them in plain language, the way a person would ask, and answer them directly. Those answers are exactly what a model pulls into its recommendation.
4. Make services, pricing signals, hours and contact easy to find
Give your services their own clearly labelled sections or pages. Include pricing signals even if they're ranges ("most repairs $150 to $400"). Put hours and contact details in text, not only in an image or a booking widget. The more of these facts a model can find, the more confidently it can recommend you over a vaguer competitor.
5. Show trust the way a model reads it
Reviews, years in business, certifications and guarantees all help, but they help most when they're in readable text and, ideally, in your structured data. "Serving families since 1998" and a visible review count give the model reasons to prefer you.
6. Keep your site readable to machines
If your whole site is rendered by JavaScript after load, or the important content lives inside images, a lot of AI crawlers see very little. Make sure the core text is in the page itself. Sites behind aggressive bot protection can also be invisible to the tools that feed AI answers, so keep public pages actually public.
The fastest way to find your gaps
Rather than guess, run your site through a free AI-visibility scan. It reads your pages the way an assistant does, scores how well AI can understand and recommend you, and shows exactly which of the things above you're missing, plus the schema and copy to fix them.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Related, but not the same. SEO is about ranking in Google's list of links. GEO is about whether an AI assistant understands and recommends you when someone asks it directly. Clear text, structured data and good answers help both, but AI search rewards clarity and facts even more than keywords.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Structured data and clearer content can be picked up within days to a few weeks as models and crawlers re-read your site. Because AI search is changing fast, it's worth re-checking your visibility periodically rather than treating it as a one-time fix.
