We checked the AI visibility of 10 HVAC companies. Not one scored an A.
When the AC dies in an Austin summer, people now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI "who can fix this near me?" So we took 10 real HVAC companies in Austin, TX and scored how well an AI assistant can actually understand and recommend each one from its website.
We ran every homepage through a tool that reads a site the way an AI assistant does and scores it from 0 to 100 on the things a model needs to recommend a business: what it does, where it serves, its services, structured data, contact details, pricing signals, hours, answers to common questions, and trust signals. HVAC is a fiercely competitive, ad-heavy local niche, so we expected sites built to be found. They were. The surprise was in the grades.
An entire niche stuck at "good enough to appear"
Nine of the ten sites were readable, and every one of them had structured data in place. The technical basics are done across the board, which is exactly what you'd expect from a trade that competes hard to be found. But look where the grades landed:
Eight of nine graded a B, one a C, and not a single company reached an A. In a niche where everyone advertises to be found, the sites all converged on the same competent-but-incomplete level: good enough for AI to list them, not good enough for it to pick them.
The gap is the deciding detail
AI could tell each of these companies does HVAC in the Austin area. What it repeatedly couldn't pin down was the detail that tips a recommendation: flat-rate versus quote pricing, whether they run 24/7 emergency service, the exact neighborhoods and suburbs covered, financing options, and plain answers to what people actually ask ("how much is a new AC unit?", "do you service my area tonight?"). When that isn't on the site in readable text, an assistant hedges, and hedging in a field of near-identical B's means it names whoever it happened to understand a hair better.
And one company was invisible. One of the ten couldn't be read at all, most likely heavy JavaScript or bot-protection blocking the crawl. That's not a low score, it's no score: when a customer asks an AI for AC repair, that business never comes up.
The takeaway
When a whole competitive niche averages 76 with zero A's, the opening is obvious. Every one of these companies is interchangeable to an AI right now. The first HVAC company in the market to put its real specifics, pricing, service area, hours, and straight answers, into readable text becomes the one the assistant names, while the rest stay a wall of identical B's. That's a weekend of clearer content, not a rebuild.
