We checked 10 roofing companies for AI visibility. Zero A's, and a third slipped to a C.

After a storm, homeowners now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI "who can look at my roof near me?" So we took 10 real roofing companies in Austin, TX and scored how well an AI assistant can actually understand and recommend each one from its website.

We ran every homepage through a tool that reads a site the way an AI assistant does and scores it from 0 to 100 on the things a model needs to recommend a business: what it does, where it serves, its services, structured data, contact details, pricing signals, hours, answers to common questions, and trust signals. Roofing is a competitive, storm-driven local niche, so these sites are built to be found. Here's how they read to an AI.

3 of 9

The same trade pattern, a little lower

Nine of the ten sites were readable. As with plumbers and HVAC companies, they'd done the basics, but not one reached an A, and a full third dropped into C territory. Here's the spread:

A (85+)
0
B (70-84)
6
C (55-69)
3
Unreadable
1

The two lowest readable scores had the same tell we've seen in every industry: no structured data. The roofers missing JSON-LD landed at the bottom, while the ones with it held a B. The schema that hands AI your facts is the difference between a model guessing and a model quoting.

What AI couldn't tell about these roofers

An assistant could tell each of these does roofing in the Austin area. What it couldn't reliably pin down was what a homeowner decides by: whether they handle insurance and hail claims, do free inspections, offer financing, the exact areas and roof types they cover, warranty terms, and plain answers to "my roof is leaking, can you come today?" When that isn't in readable text, the model hedges, and names whoever it understood a little better.

And one company was invisible. One of the ten couldn't be read at all, most likely heavy JavaScript or bot-protection blocking the crawl. When a homeowner asks an AI for a roofer, that business simply never comes up.

The takeaway

Roofing follows the trades pattern: everyone competes to be found, the sites converge on a B at best, and the ones missing structured data quietly slide to a C. That's the opening. The first roofer to put its real specifics, insurance handling, service area, warranty, straight answers, into readable text with proper schema becomes the one an AI names while the rest stay interchangeable. It's clearer content, not a rebuild.
