We scanned 9 hair salons for AI visibility — and they beat every other industry we've checked.

People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI "where should I get my hair done in Austin?" So we took 9 real hair salons and scored how well an AI assistant can actually understand and recommend each one from its website. They came out on top.

We ran every homepage through a tool that reads a site the way an AI assistant does and scores it from 0 to 100 on the things a model needs to recommend a business: what it does, where it serves, its services, structured data, contact details, pricing signals, hours, answers to common questions, and trust signals. After seven other industries, salons posted the best numbers we've recorded, and the reason is worth paying attention to.

Simpler sites, better legibility

Every one of the nine salons was readable, the only industry in our study with zero invisible sites, and eight of nine had structured data. Three reached an A. Here's the spread:

B (70-84)

C (55-69)

The counterintuitive lesson

Put this next to our med spa study and something clicks. Med spas invest in gorgeous, animation-heavy sites and averaged just 69, with a quarter of them invisible to AI entirely. Salons, running simpler, more text-forward sites, averaged 77 with none invisible. Same beauty world, opposite outcome. To an AI, the plainer site that spells out its services in words beats the cinematic one that hides them in graphics and scripts. Looking good to a person and being legible to a model are two different jobs, and here the less flashy niche won.

Even the winners left points on the table. The A-graders nailed services and structure, but most salons still left an assistant guessing on pricing ranges, which stylists do what, and answers to "do you do balayage / extensions / my hair type?" The gap from a B to an A here is small, and it's specifics, not a redesign.

The takeaway

Salons are the encouraging case: being legible to AI doesn't take a big budget or a fancy site, it takes clear text and structured data, and simpler sites often have an edge. As clients shift to asking AI directly, the salons that spell out their services, pricing signals and answers in plain, readable text will keep being the ones it names.
